Broken Hill Art Galleries and Attractions

Broken Hill is situated on the lands of the Wilyakali people of the Barkindji nation, the first buildings of the new mining town of Broken Hill were erected after silver ore was discovered in 1885. We were named Australia’s first heritage city in 2015 for the Victorian era industrial architectural environment.

The Broken Hill Art Exchange, situated in the middle of the city’s main street, presents the opportunity for innovative research & artistic development with heritage listed buildings, museums of the mining and railway history along with historical synagogue and mosque museums run by the Broken Hill Historical Society.

In addition, Broken Hill lies in an arid desert rangeland landscape within a short driving distance to scenic bush walks, the (almost) ghost town of Silverton, or longer day trip options to visit ancient indigenous rock art at nearby Mutawintji National Park or the birdlife-rich Menindee Lakes System.
