February 2025 news
Happy New Year! - a bit late, but we have been officially closed for the summer break. The committee and volunteers have been working extremely hard behind the scenes on our 2025 program and we are PUMPED. We are also finalising volunteer shifts to open the Grand Monday to Saturday 10am till 2pm to make it easier for our members to use the facilities.
Waste 2 Art is Back - The Year of Toys!
Thank you to the Broken Hill City Council for supporting this program again with a Community Assistance Grant. We are excited to be running this with partners Lifeline and registration is open!
This years theme of toys invites people to either use old broken toys to create an artwork or functional object OR create a toy or something playful from manmade waste. This year we are hosting a new local category for preschool children to celebrate the budding creatives in our community.
We are also delighted to announce a new bonus prize for the best creation using waste metal. Broken Hill is a town of metalworkers and we want to see more of these creations.
We have announced two of the workshops we will be hosting on the 1st and 8th of March to inspire our young and not-so-young creatives - details and registration on our dedicated web page.
The exhibition will run the first two weeks of June at the GeoCentre and Lifeline Tip Shop so there is plenty of time to work on your creations.
Full details of the program along with registration and workshop information can be found on our dedicated web page and you can join the community on our Facebook page. We also welcome Annette to the Waste 2 Art team, she is working very hard to make this program a great success.
Celebrating a Year of Drawing
Linden started the monthly drawing club a year ago! On the first Sunday of the month, people gather in the Kitchen Gallery from 1-3pm at the Art Exchange to draw a clothed model. Experienced and beginners all welcome for this non-guided meet-up and this Sunday, our Secretary Nadina will be modelling. We have pencils, pastels and paper, or you can bring your own. No bookings required and free for members or $5 for non members.
Art Library & Reading Room at the Grand is OPEN
The Art Exchange has a rich collection of art books and Linden has been busy organising our reading room for easy access. The Art Exchange Library/Reading Room is open to the public for browsing most days (excluding Sundays) from 10am to 2pm. Further donations greatly appreciated.
Residencies Are Open!
If you want to come to experience the magic of the outback to inspire your practice, book in now. We also have affordable studio space and workshop space for local artists, get in touch by email or check out our website for more information. It might be your last opportunity to stay at the historic and majestic Grand.
2025 Major Project ……. Watch This Space
The Art Exchange will be launching a new exhibition of local artists, crafters and creatives (Broken Hill and Central Darling Shire) to coincide with the Mundi Mundi Bash. You may remember previous years we hosted an Art Trail with works displayed in local business windows?? …. Its coming back!!
We are super excited about this project and the opportunity to show Bashers the amazing talent in our region. Further details to be announced and a call out for artists planned for April.
